Student visa Spain: prepare your course, cover and documents

Start with the course and the planned stay. Admissions, immigration requirements, healthcare and accommodation need to agree on the same dates.

Use this guide to prepare your questions. Your nationality, residence route and individual circumstances can change the answer.

Confirm that the course supports your intended application

Admission and immigration eligibility are separate checks. Ask the institution for the exact course name, attendance format, duration, recognised status and the document it can issue. An online course should not be assumed to support residence in Spain.

Check health insurance for the study period

The long-stay study visa regulation requires insurance with an entity authorised in Spain, benefits similar to the basic common services of the national health system, and validity for the planned stay. Check the competent authority’s instructions for your case.

Prepare a dated document checklist

Requirements depend on the application and circumstances. Ask which items need translations or legalisation, and whether documents remain valid on the application date. Track requests and delivery dates so a late certificate does not surprise you.

  • Admission or enrolment evidence.
  • Passport validity and application formalities.
  • Evidence of available funds and health insurance.
  • Any additional age, family or duration-related documents.
  • Accommodation and arrival arrangements.

Plan the first weeks as a student

Keep the university’s international office details, find out how to reach campus, and leave time for the administrative steps applicable to your status. Check your actual work rights before accepting a job. Academic deadlines do not guarantee immigration processing dates.

Your questions, answered

Does admission guarantee a student visa?

No. The immigration authority assesses the application independently.

Will travel insurance always be accepted?

No. Compare the actual cover with the study-route requirements; a travel label is not evidence of suitability.

Can I ask for help before enrolment?

Yes. Share the course, city and planned dates so that the right questions can be identified early.
