Moving to Spain: your practical relocation plan

Turn the idea of moving to Spain into an ordered plan. Work backwards from your intended move date, with separate tracks for documents, healthcare, money and your first home.

Use this guide to prepare your questions. Your nationality, residence route and individual circumstances can change the answer.

Before you choose a moving date

Write down your nationality, current country of residence, reasons for moving, household members and intended length of stay. These details help identify the questions that need an immigration assessment. Check the relevant official route before booking around an assumed processing time.

Make one document list for the household

Keep an organised folder with the documents requested for your route. Track who issues each document, whether a translation or legalisation is required, and when it expires. Never order every possible certificate without first checking whether it is needed.

Give housing and healthcare their own deadlines

For housing, decide how long you can use temporary accommodation and what makes a long-term home acceptable. For healthcare, confirm the date on which your cover or entitlement begins. Allow space in your plan for problems such as a delayed appointment or unavailable apartment.

  • Research neighbourhoods around your actual commute.
  • Prepare a realistic rental budget and proof of funds or income.
  • Check ongoing care and prescription arrangements.
  • Review tax exposure in both countries before major financial decisions.

After arrival: organise the next administrative steps

Your next steps depend on your status and municipality. Check local address registration, the residence or identity-card formalities applicable to you, access to healthcare and practical accounts. An NIE identifies a foreign national; it does not by itself establish a right to live or work in Spain.

Your questions, answered

Do you only help retirees?

No. The planning tools and guides also cover families, students, professionals and people already in Spain.

Is there a single relocation timeline?

No. Route, nationality, family circumstances and appointment availability affect the sequence. Build your plan around verified requirements.

What should I send in my first enquiry?

Your contact details, intended move period, destination and main question are enough. Do not send passport scans or health histories through the general form.
