Start with your status, not a generic retirement checklist
The first question is not which town you prefer. It is which framework applies to you: a new application to live in Spain, an existing right connected with earlier residence, or another route linked to work or family. Your nationality, date of any previous residence and whether anyone will work can change the starting point.
Use current official guidance for your circumstances and the authority handling your case. Advice written for another British applicant may be useful for questions, but it is not a substitute for route-specific instructions.
If you already lived in Spain before 2021
Check whether your position is covered by the residence arrangements for people who were living in Spain before the end of the transition period. Gather the residence evidence and identity documents that demonstrate your situation, then confirm the current process with the relevant Spanish authority.
If you are planning a new move
Identify whether a non-working residence route is relevant to your plans or whether another route should be considered. A retirement plan does not automatically create a single immigration category, and continuing work can change the analysis.

Settle healthcare before booking the move
Healthcare should be planned for the period after arrival, not only for the journey. Some UK State Pensioners and people receiving certain exportable benefits may be eligible for UK-funded healthcare in Spain through an S1. Eligibility is personal, and the official guidance says an S1 must be registered with Spain's INSS.
If an S1 or another public entitlement does not apply, investigate the healthcare route connected with your residence plans. Private cover can have its own eligibility, conditions, exclusions, waiting periods, network and documents. Do not assume that a policy described as suitable for a move will meet your individual application.
Questions for an S1 or public-care route
Ask the responsible UK service whether you qualify, which evidence is needed and what to do when your circumstances change. After arrival, confirm how the certificate is registered and how dependants are treated under Spanish rules.
Questions for private cover
Compare the actual policy wording with the residence instructions that apply to you. Ask about the start date, provider network, hospital access, authorisations, copayments, waiting periods and the handling of pre-existing conditions. Keep medical details in the secure process intended for them, not in a public enquiry or analytics event.

Gather evidence and track what can expire
Create a private document list before making appointments. Separate documents needed for residence from documents needed for healthcare, pensions, tax or housing. Check whether a certificate must be recent, translated, legalised or issued for a particular consular district.
The Spanish Consulate in London publishes route-specific instructions for non-working residence applications. Use the consulate responsible for your place of residence and recheck its page before submitting anything, because formats and supporting evidence can change.
- Passport and identity records for each person moving.
- Residence, visa or registration evidence that matches your starting position.
- Civil-status documents when they are relevant to your application or family situation.
- Pension, income and asset evidence requested for the route you are considering.
- Healthcare documents, kept separate and shared only through an appropriate secure process.
- A simple expiry tracker for certificates, translations, appointments and policy dates.

Treat pensions and tax as separate decisions
A residence document does not answer every tax question, and receiving a pension does not by itself explain how all income will be treated. Before moving, list your pension types, investments, property, rental income and continuing connections with the UK. Take that fact pattern to a qualified adviser familiar with both countries.
Ask for advice before changing a pension payment, selling property, transferring investments or closing an account. Keep copies of residence evidence, tax-residence documents and prior filings, but use a secure channel for any detailed personal records.
Build a cross-border fact sheet
Record the planned move date, where you expect to spend your time, the source and currency of each income stream, property ownership, family connections and any work that will continue. This gives an adviser facts to assess instead of a conclusion to confirm.
Questions to take to an adviser
Ask which registrations or returns may apply, how the UK–Spain tax treaty fits the facts, what records should be retained and which decisions should wait until your residence position is clear. Do not reduce an individual tax assessment to a single day-count rule.

Choose a first home for ordinary life
A holiday visit can hide the practical details that shape retirement. Assess the exact address for healthcare access, transport, shopping, stairs or lift access, heat, noise, family visits and the distance to an airport or station. If you are renting first, read the written terms and verify the property and payment route before transferring money.
Keep the first housing decision reversible where possible. A short initial arrangement can give you time to learn the area, test your routine and decide whether the location works outside the season in which you visited.
- The distance and route to the healthcare services you may use.
- Daily shopping, pharmacy access and public transport.
- Accessibility, stairs, lift, climate control and building maintenance.
- The practical cost of utilities, travel, deposits and professional help.
- A plan for visits to family and for returning to the UK when needed.
Use a first-year checklist after arrival
Once you arrive, work from dates and evidence rather than a vague to-do list. Keep one record of applications, appointments, registrations, policy dates and unanswered questions. Review the plan after your first normal month, when you have seen the real rhythm of the neighbourhood and your spending.
Rules and procedures can change. This article is a planning aid, not a decision by a consulate, tax authority, healthcare body or insurer.

Your questions, answered
Do UK pensioners need a visa to retire in Spain?
It depends on when you lived in Spain, your current rights, nationality, family circumstances and whether anyone will work. Identify the applicable route and check the current authority instructions.
Can a UK State Pension provide healthcare in Spain?
Some people may qualify for UK-funded healthcare through an S1, but eligibility is personal and the certificate must be registered in Spain. Confirm your position through the official healthcare guidance.
Is private health insurance always required for a British pensioner?
Not always. Check whether a public entitlement applies and then compare the requirements of the residence route with the terms of any private policy you consider.
Should I buy a property before moving to Spain?
A purchase is a separate housing and financial decision and does not by itself settle residence or healthcare. Verify your route and budget before making a commitment.
