1. Confirm that this is the route you are applying for
Start with the current instructions from the Spanish authority handling your application and confirm that the non-lucrative residence route matches your plans. Nationality, family circumstances, existing residence rights and the consulate can change the questions you need to resolve.
Do not treat a policy marketed for visas as proof that it fits your individual application. Use the route and authority as the starting point for your checklist.

2. Ask what evidence the application expects
Before paying, ask which documents are accepted for your case: an insurance certificate, policy conditions, proof of payment, a letter describing the scope of cover, a translation or another format. Keep the answer in writing and check whether documents must be recent.
Prepare one private folder for each applicant. Use the same spelling of names and dates as the passport and application.
- Certificate showing the insured person and policy dates.
- Individual policy terms and relevant conditions.
- Proof of payment, if requested.
- Translation or legalisation requirements confirmed with the authority.
- Contact details for correcting a certificate before submission.
3. Check dates, territory and continuity
Compare the policy start date with the date required by the application and your expected arrival. Ask what happens if an appointment or travel date moves and how an amended certificate is issued.
Confirm that the contract is designed for living in Spain rather than only for a short visit. Keep any travel assistance or repatriation benefit separate from the core healthcare evidence unless the authority specifically says otherwise.
4. Understand what comprehensive cover means in this contract
Read the actual terms instead of relying on a label. Ask about doctors, specialists, diagnostics, emergency care, hospital treatment, authorisations, exclusions, limits and the provider network near the place where you expect to live.
If the route or authority has a condition about copayments, waiting periods or reimbursement, request a written explanation of how the proposed policy meets that condition. The answer must relate to the individual contract, not a generic advertisement.
- Are copayments or deductibles present?
- Are hospitalisation and surgery available from the relevant start date?
- Are benefits subject to waiting periods or limits?
- What authorisations are required?
- How are pre-existing conditions assessed?
5. Treat medical underwriting as a private step
Answer health questions accurately through the secure process agreed with the provider or authorised distributor. Do not send medical reports, scans or full medical histories through a general enquiry form.
Ask how exclusions, loadings or acceptance conditions will appear in the individual policy. A residence route does not remove underwriting questions, and an article cannot predict acceptance.

6. Check cancellation, renewal and changes before payment
Locate the clauses covering cancellation, renewal, delayed appointments and a refused application. Refunds and changes depend on the contract; they are not automatic simply because an application has a different outcome.
Keep the certificate, policy conditions, payment evidence and written answers together. Set a reminder for renewal if the residence period continues beyond the initial policy dates.

Your final non-lucrative visa insurance check
Before submitting, compare the authority's current checklist with the documents you actually hold. Verify each applicant's name, date, territorial scope and evidence of payment. If anything is unclear, resolve it before the appointment.
For an initial conversation, share the route, nationality, destination and intended timing. Do not include medical records or identity documents in the first enquiry.
Your questions, answered
Does every private policy meet the non-lucrative visa requirements?
No. Fit depends on the current route instructions, the authority handling the application and the individual policy terms.
When should the insurance start?
The required date can depend on your application and arrival plan. Confirm it with the authority and ask the provider how a delayed appointment would be handled.
Do I need to disclose pre-existing conditions?
Answer the provider's health questions accurately through the secure process. Do not guess or omit information, and do not send clinical documents through the general form.
Can I send my medical history with my first enquiry?
No. Start with the basic route and contact information. Use a secure, appropriate channel only if further information is genuinely required.
